It's not every day that you come across a record-breaking occurrence. Whether it's the world's largest gingerbread house or, in the case of Pamela Wang, potentially the world's heaviest avocado. As Wang was out for a walk in Kealakekua, Hawaii, she stumbled across an avocado the size of her head, quite literally. While Wang was unsure of what exactly she found, she took it straight to the Kona Green Market, a farmers market in South Kona, Hawaii.
As West Hawaii Today reported, the massive avocado weighs 5.23 pounds and belongs to a family of avocados known as the Daily 11. These types are known for their gigantic size, and as Wang stated about the incident, "I see avocados every day and I pick up avocados every day, but this one...it was hard to miss. It was as big as my head."
Guinness World Records was contacted for the find, and while there is no category for the largest avocado, there is indeed a category for the world's heaviest avocado.
As Elizabeth Montoya, assistant public relations manager with Guinness World Records America, Inc. wrote in an email obtained by West Hawaii Today, Guinness verified an avocado that was submitted by Gabriel Ramirez Nahim of Caracas, Venezuela as the world's heaviest avocado at 4 pounds and 13 ounces. It is the current record holder.
Wang's giant avocado, however, is a great deal larger than the current 8-year record, making it unofficially the biggest avocado. While there have likely been heavier avocados, Guinness World Records can only verify those that have been weighed on a legitimate scale.
While the 5-pound avocado didn't grow on her property, Wang is free to claim this particular fruit because the tree overhangs onto the road outside of a private property line.
After weighing the avocado, Wang and her friends are waiting to hear back on whether or not it is officially holds a world records title, a process that will take up to two months. However, she and her friends enjoyed the avocado at Caffe Florian in Kealakekua.
As Wang told West Hawaii Today, "It tasted excellent. The tree is very good. We had 10 people there and didn't even use up one half of the avocado." Avocado toast, anyone?
