Best Breakfast Items at Whataburger According to a Texan

You can't really call yourself a Texan until you've eaten breakfast at Whataburger. The fast food chain has a cult-like following for its beloved menu items and most locations are open 24 hours a day to serve up an array of delicious items including a bevy of burgers, chicken sandwiches, fries, and shakes. Between the hours of 11 pm-11 am, Whataburger's breakfast menu is packed full of delicious favorites, perfect for a late night snack (what's better than pancakes after a night at the bar?) or to start your workday.

I've tried my fair share of Whataburger breakfast items, but to refresh my memory, I drove to my nearest Whataburger at 9 a.m., just in time to sample the breakfast offerings. Here are the best items, ranked in my humble opinion as a bona fide Texan.

5. Pancakes

I am pleasantly surprised by how picture-perfect Whataburger's pancakes look. The meal comes with three medium-sized pancakes, a few butter packages, and a large syrup. Based on their appearance, I had pretty high hopes for the taste.

Like influencers' photos on Instagram, the pancakes were aesthetically pleasing, but didn't go much further than that. The best way to describe the pancakes was simply okay. The texture was quite pleasant, with a fluffy interior and crisp edges. However, the pancakes had no taste. Both my tasting partner and I could not detect any sweetness or flavor. The pancakes were bland and were not helped by the syrup. The syrup was too sweet and did not have enough maple flavor.

4. Biscuit Sandwich

The biscuit sandwich (wherever you order) is usually a safe breakfast option. Biscuits are usually great, and it's not difficult to mess up eggs and sausage. However, Whataburger's biscuit sandwich was good, but not great. The egg was fluffy and cooked well and the sausage had the signature breakfast sausage flavor while the biscuit was a tad dry. This sandwich was entirely more delicious with a side of spicy ketchup, so remember the sauce if you order this!

3. Cinnamon Roll

I've been to Whataburger my fair share of times and never realized it sold cinnamon rolls. My tasting partner and I were both pleasantly surprised by how delicious and fresh the cinnamon rolls were. The entire roll was soft, pillow, and flakey. I was most impressed with how much cinnamon flavor they packed into each bite. The frosting was sweet, but not overbearing. It's something I would wholeheartedly order again.

2. Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit

You can't talk about Whataburger without mentioning the honey butter chicken biscuit, or hbcb for short. I agree with the masses that this combination is amazingly delicious. The crispy chicken paired with sweet and savory honey butter is magic. The honey butter truly makes this sandwich and I wish I knew how it was made. The sauce is tangy and sweet, with a richness and savoriness from the butter. It pairs beautifully with the crisp chicken, truly making this sandwich the perfect bite.

As I mentioned before, the biscuit Whataburger serves is a tad dry, so make sure you add on a sauce to counteract it.

1. Bacon Taquito with Cheese

Breakfast tacos are a staple in Texas, so I knew the taquito had to be good. I chose bacon as my filling, but you can choose either bacon, sausage, or potato. I was shocked at just how tasty and filling it was. The scrambled egg was light and fluffy, the bacon was super crispy and the ratio of tortilla to filling was just right, ensuring a perfect bite every time.

Whataburger's Bacon Taquito tastes great on its own, but I suggest adding spicy ketchup to bring it to an entirely different level. Want even more? Ask for your eggs to be cooked ranchero picante style (cooked with jalapenos and ranchero sauce) for 50 cents extra.
