You Might Guess America's Favorite Pie, But You'll Never Believe What's Second

It's time to channel your inner-Don McLean, America. Well, it's sort of time to do so. What we really want you to do, though, is say "Hi, hi" to pie. The Harris Poll has done some fancy factoring and pointed polling in order to find the pies Americans love best. The people have spoken.

America' favorite pie is apple pie. There's no major surprise there, as apple pie ranked the highest with 12 percent of Americans marking it as a favorite. However, the second place winner is the most surprising.

Overall, pizza came in a very close second for Americans, pulling 10 percent of the total vote. What's more is that pizza is actually the favored type of pie among men aged 18 to 34.

Pizza comes in second?!

Don't even get us started on the multitude of reasons that pizza pie doesn't fall into the same country (let alone county) as apple, blueberry, and coconut cream. We digress.

Tabling the pizza-is-a-pie discussion, more than 7 in 10 U.S. adults prefer sweet pies over savory varieties, which accounted for about 72 percent of the vote.

Most Americans also agree that the best part of the pie is the filling at 69 percent, though 3 in 10 believe the best part of the pie is the pastry or crust bit at 31 percent.

Pie is, to us, inherently sweet. Even pecan pie, one of the nuttiest pies, is sweet. Cake is pretty darn sweet, too, and it seems that many Americans tend to prefer cake over even apple pie.

In the South, 6 in 10 adults enjoy cake over pie, while 58 percent of Midwestern adults go for pie over cake. Overall, it's almost evenly split between cake and pie, with 52 percent preferring cake and 48 percent preferring pie.

With a fork stuck into an apple pie in one hand and an American flag in the other, we're going to dive into America's favorite. Do we have a bowl of vanilla ice cream next to that forked apple pie?

Yes, yes we do.
