I've been a fan of Starbucks frappuccinos for as long as I can remember. So when I saw that Starbucks was releasing a limited-edition Christmas Tree Frappuccino, I knew I had to book it to the nearest Starbucks and taste it first-hand. Plus you know, get the perfect shot for Instagram.
The holiday beverage is advertised as a peppermint mocha crème frappuccino topped with a matcha whipped cream, a caramel drizzle, candied cranberry and a freeze-dried strawberry.
Starbucks really went all out on decorating this limited time festive drink to add some holiday spirit to your coffee run. The dark brown peppermint mocha acts as the large christmas tree trunk. Next, matcha whipped cream is pipped on decoratively as a caramel drizzle garland along with cranberry ornaments decorate the tree. A final addition of a freeze-dried strawberry tree topper finishes off the drink.
I love the taste of peppermint mocha so I was instantly intrigued. Peppermint, chocolate, and a whipped cream tree-how could I say no to that?
I stepped into my neighborhood Starbucks hesitant since I saw no signage about the new drink. After asking the barista if they were selling any, she told me I was the second one of the day to order it only after telling me she accidentally made the first one as a white peppermint mocha instead of a peppermint mocha, turning the "tree trunk" white.
The baristas were still getting the hang of the new ingredients. One of the baristas grabbed a whipped cream container ready to add whipped cream to a hot beverage for a separate order. She gasped in shock as green whipped cream came spraying out, completely ruining the drink and making her start a new one from scratch.
As it turns out, there is none. Yes, the new drink is actually made as a frappuccino crème, meaning there is no actual coffee in the drink. Although I was disappointed I wouldn't be receiving my caffeine fix, it didn't last long since the drink tasted rather good. I enjoyed the sweetness of peppermint and a hint of chocolate but the matcha whipped cream was very subtle. All it was missing was the bit of bitterness from the coffee.
This limited time drink is only available from December 7th through the 11th in Canada and the United States. While it's not a tastebud-shocking frappuccino like the Unicorn Frappuccino or even the Zombie Frappuccino, it's fun to look and really, that's all you need for those Instagram photos.
