Spam Fries: This Dish of Desperation Has Had a Glow up, and It's Tasty

Spam and fries are hardly two ingredients you picture occupying the same plate. If you're like most people, you probably don't picture Spam occupying your plate at all, but Spam fries are a real thing. Although the idea of eating canned meat in the form of fries sounds weird, it's actually pretty tasty.

Here's an easy recipe that'll help you whip up some Spam fries in a matter of 10 minutes. Though it's a weird food trend, it could make for a great appetizer for last minute guests. After all, poutine is a popular side dish in Canada, and this is basically like the poor man's version. Also, you get to skip the carbohydrates in the potatoes by just frying the Spam by itself. They won't even know it's Spam, hopefully.

Spam Fries Recipe

3 ingredients are all you need for this recipe. Skip the grocery store or Walmart and go pantry hunting instead, because you probably have all the ingredients you need at home.

Grab one 12oz can of Spam, peanut oil for frying, and any dipping sauce you'd like. The recipe recommends Sriracha Mayo, HOUSE OF TSANG® General Tsao Stir Fry Sauce, or Sriracha Ketchup, but any dipping sauce will do.

If you'd like to take this to the next level without technically frying, an air fryer may also work. Fried chicken, fries, and other crispy dishes come out of the air fryer just as delicious, and an air fryer might even save you some prep time.

Either heat 4 inches of oil in a pan, or set your fryer to 350 degrees. While that's heating up, you can quickly cut the Spam into 6 slices. Think french fry style.

If going the oil route, place batches of the fries in the oil for 3 minutes. Drain on paper towels after they've turned golden brown.

If you're using an air fryer, cook at 360 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes. That's really all there is to Spam fries.

These can be ready in a total time of less than 30 minutes, making them a great snack for the nights you're craving junk food appetizers or luncheon meat. You can even personalize them by adding seasonings such as black pepper, cayenne pepper, or feta cheese. You can also add breadcrumbs or uncooked ramen to make a crunchy Spam. It sounds weird, but hey, we're already using ramen in salads. Happy frying!
