Anyone who buys candy assortments knows that Smarties candy is almost always included in the variety bag. While they're not chocolate or full of caramel, I'll never decline a pack of Smarties candy rolls. Part of the reason is that they remind me so much of my childhood, which isn't surprising considering the ingredients have never changed.
That's right; surely before you were born, Smarties were cooking up the candy rolls with the same five ingredients: artificial flavors, calcium stearate, citric acid, sugar, (and a few natural ingredients).
It's been over 70 years since Edward Dee moved to the United States and founded Ce De Candy, Inc. Since then, the Smarties Candy Company has been creating one of our favorite Halloween treats. The New Jersey company produces wafer rolls that come in six flavors, orange-cream, pineapple, cherry, strawberry, grape, and orange.

Although they're not the local family business you love to support in your hometown, there's something about the Dee family. Jessica Dee, Liz Dee, and Sarah Dee are proud 5th generation candy makers. It's heartwarming to see Edwards's granddaughters running the candy factory.
