The paloma, like the margarita, is a Mexican favorite. The main difference is that paloma drink recipes use grapefruit as the starring citrus, with lime in a supporting role. The paloma is fizzy and refreshing, perfect for sipping poolside or accompanying Taco Tuesday dinners. Or if you're reading this in the dead of winter and you're lucky enough for it to be citrus season, grab some fresh grapefruit juice and lime juice for the perfect hint of summer.

The paloma cocktail couldn't be simpler. It's equal amounts of silver tequila and grapefruit juice, with fresh lime juice and agave for a touch of sweetness. Let the citrus and agave mix chill first, then add the tequila and a bit of salt. When your friends arrive, pour over ice in a highball glass or a collins glass, add club soda or sparkling water, and garnish with grapefruit wedges. You can also run a lime wedge around the rim of the glass for an extra citrus pop.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 2/3 cups tequila
  • 2 2/3 cups grapefruit juice
  • 1 cup lime juice
  • 1 cup water
  • 5 tbs agave nectar (Or to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 10 oz Sparkling water (More or less, to top off individual servings)

Instructions

In a large pitcher, stir together the grapefruit juice, lime juice, water, and agave. Chill for 1 hour.

Stir in the tequila and salt.

To serve, fill a glass 3/4 full with ice, pour in enough drink base to reach that same 3/4 full mark, then top with of sparkling water. Garnish with grapefruit or lime wedges. Enjoy!

Notes

Traditionally, this cocktail is made with grapefruit soda. But we find for big batches, it's more refreshing and flavorful to use actual fruit juice.
