Prep Time: 20 minutes | Cook Time: 40 minutes
- 6 apples
- 1/3 cup butter
- 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2/3 cup milk
- 1/4 cup butter, softened
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
Preheat your oven to 350ºF and peel 4 apples. Slice into wedges.
Place the butter in a 9-inch cake pan. Place in oven until melted. Sprinkle the brown sugar in the butter and stir to combine. Arrange the apples in the pan and bake until bubbly, about 10-15 minutes. Remove from oven.
Peel remaining apples and grate. Set aside. In a large bowl combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, ground ginger, and ground cinnamon. Add in the grated apples, milk, butter, egg, and vanilla. Beat with an electric mixer until combined. Spoon over the apples and bake until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean, about 35-40 minutes. Cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Loosen edges and invert to a serving platter. Cool 20 minutes and serve warm.
We like to use Golden Delicious apples for this recipe.
Spoon any topping that falls out back onto the top of the cake.
