Regional recipes are probably one of my favorite recipe types to research. Built around the region and culture, these sometimes lost recipes are reminiscent of times before avocado toast and every Frappuccino flavor possible. Today while scouring the internet I stumbled up a recipe for Amish Peanut Butter Spread. Intrigued, I looked further into the history of the creamy peanut butter spread but alas I came up completely empty of solid facts and written records of when and where the Amish Peanut Butter recipe came to be.

What I do know is that Amish peanut butter spread is a favorite condiment in the Amish community and the Mennonite community. Today Amish restaurants as well as gift shops located in Amish country like to serve and sell the Amish church spread alongside apple butter for tourists to enjoy back at home. Locations in the United States with large Amish and Mennonite populations include Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania as well as Kentucky, Missouri, Michigan, New York, and Wisconsin.

According to multiple blog posts, Amish peanut butter spread is a cream and sweet spread made with peanut butter, marshmallow creme, and light corn syrup. Some recipes call for brown sugar and maple syrup, but all follow the same principle.

To begin, combine brown sugar and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil to create a simple syrup. Remove from the heat and add in peanut butter, marshmallow fluff, corn syrup, and vanilla extract or maple flavoring. Mix in a mixing bowl and let cool to room temperature before serving on homemade bread, graham crackers, pretzels, or even muffins! I could see this tasting great on ice cream as well!

Store the Amish peanut butter spread in an air-tight container in the fridge. You can also keep the spread in a squeeze bottle to top everything from waffles to dinner rolls!
