Get Your Cookie Jars Ready; The Girl Scouts are Releasing a New Cookie

With a three-finger promise, the Girl Scouts of America are getting ready for their next round of cookie sales and next year expect something sweet to hit your doorsteps. The largest girl-led entrepreneurial program in the world has been selling cookies for over one-hundred years. And coming 2019, neighbors and friends will be able to purchase the new gluten-free Caramel Chocolate Chip cookie in select areas across the country.

The cookie, Caramel Chocolate Chip, a rich salted caramel and chocolate chip cookie joins returning gluten-free favorite,  Toffee-tastic® cookie, a rich buttery cookie with golden toffee bits. Both of these cookies will be available as a traditional cookie as well as a gluten-free option in select areas.

The girl scout cookie phenomenon started way back in 1917 when one Girl Scout troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma baked homemade cookies and sold them as a service project. In the 1920's each Girl Scout troop began baking their own cookies and selling them door-to-door to earn money for their troop. It wasn't until 1951 when GSA decided to start selling signature cookies in three varieties: Sandwich, Shortbread, and Chocolate Mint (this cookie later became Thin Mint Cookies).

Today the cookie sellers offer favorite cookie varieties like Girl Scout S'mores, Caramel deLites / Samoas, Peanut Butter Patties / Tagalongs, Lemonades, Thanks-A-Lots, Savannah Smiles, and Do-si-dos / Peanut Butter Sandwiches.

While it's always exciting to see Girl Scout Cookies being sold, no one benefits more than the Girl Scouts themselves. The program itself plays a powerful role in developing financial thinking and business training for young Girl Scouts. GSUSA CEO Sylvia Acevedo shares, "Girl entrepreneurs learn valuable interpersonal and business skills via the cookie program that help them become successful in their future careers, no matter what path they choose."

While the cookie season hasn't started yet, (it usually begins in January) you can enter your zip code in the Find Cookies! search box to find out when these will be near you.
