Pour Moi

This Map of Each State's Most Popular Cocktail Has Surprising Results

We all have a favorite cocktail, whether it's a gin-based gimlet or a classic old fashioned or whiskey sour. Pour Moi has taken it a step further by creating a map of the most popular cocktail for each state, and the results may surprise you!

Favorite Cocktails Worldwide

Pour Moi first compiled a map of the favorite cocktails across the world, and the results show that the pornstar martini is the most popular worldwide. This fruity drink has over 18 million searches every year! The classic pornstar martini consists of passionfruit liquor, passionfruit juice and vanilla vodka, along with a chaser shot of Prosecco.

Some other popular drinks worldwide are the Pina Colada, sangria, and Aperol Spritz, which is a made with Aperol, Prosecco and soda water. Some other cocktails that made the top ten across the world are the Negroni, espresso martini, Long Island ice tea, daiquiri, mojito, and the cachaca-based caipirinha.

The cocktail ingredients across the world are endless, from classy liqueurs like orange liqueur and amaretto to mixers like club soda, ginger beer, egg white, orange juice and cranberry juice and garnishes of maraschino cherries and lime wedges. The favorite in each country or region is based on local ingredients, food culture, and climate, making for a diverse mix of cocktails around the world!

Most Popular Cocktails in the U.S.

When looking specifically at the United States, it looks like Pina Coladas take the number one spot in all of their coconuty, pineapple juice and white rum deliciousness. These classic, summery cocktails are from Puerto Rico and can be served blended or poured over ice. The states that chose this classic cocktail as their favorite are Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Hawaii, Illinois, Virginia, New Jersey and Florida.

The pornstar martini is a popular choice throughout the South, along with some outliers of New Mexico and the Dakotas. It looks like Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi love a good daiquiri, which commonly includes strawberry, rum, simple syrup, and lime juice or lemon juice, with a lime wedge garnish.

Long island iced tea is also surprisingly popular, containing a mix of tequila, vodka, rum, triple sec, gin and cola to give it the same color as its namesake. As for the west coast, the Italian Negroni is a hit, made with equal parts gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth. Along with these, the Spanish sangria is beloved in the random states of Idaho, Wisconsin and Maryland.

Last but not least, the espresso martini has a cluster of American fans on the east coast. Do you agree with your state's favorite?

Many of these results feel unexpected to me. For one, the official drink of New Orleans is the Sazerac, a mix of rye whiskey, angostura bitters and absinthe, so it's interesting that Louisiana's favorite drink is the daiquiri.

As for New York, I typically picture a stylish New Yorker enjoying happy hour with a dry martini or a Manhattan, or a cosmopolitan like Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City. As for Texas, I would have expected a margarita or the beloved grapefruit-tequila Paloma to take the first spot.

However, the data doesn't lie! It seems that the Pina Colada is as popular in Hawaii as the famous mai tai is, and I suppose the Alaskans drink Long Island iced tea to pretend like they live in a more tropical area.

If this makes you want to whip up your favorite cocktail recipe with a shaker, be our guest! Whether you go for a Moscow Mule, Bloody Mary or lemon twist sidecar, you now know whether the rest of your state agrees with your choice.
