The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning on Thursday, December 19 for Almark foods bulk hard-boiled eggs due to being contaminated with an outbreak of listeria. Already the deadly listeria outbreak has affected five states (Florida, Maine, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Texas). One state, Texas, has already reported a death due to the listeria infection.
Listeria Outbreak Linked to Hard-Boiled Eggs
The CDC is warning people across the U.S. to be wary of hard-boiled eggs, or products made from them, after linking a number of listeria infections to eggs sold by a Georgia company. https://t.co/Ndbxa3zo33 pic.twitter.com/y8do57skA3

According to the CDC, the fresh hard-boiled peeled eggs produced by Almark Foods of Gainesville, Georgia were packaged in plastic pails of various sizes for use by foodservice operators. While the products have not been recalled, the food products are currently on high-risk and should not be sold or served. This also includes Food processors and manufacturers, who should not use the eggs to prepare ready-to-eat foods such as egg salad or deviled eggs. Eggs prepared by Almark and directly sold or other brands of hard-boiled eggs are still safe to use.
What is Listeria?
According to the US Food and Drug Administration, Listeria monocytogenes is a pathogenic (disease-causing) bacteria that can cause flu-like symptoms for weeks. Pregnant women, the very young, immune-compromised, and elderly are at higher risk when it comes to listeria contamination and should be wary of this food safety alert.
People infected may feel muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea as well as fever. More severe symptoms include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Symptoms may happen a few hours to a few days after eating the infected food.
Women who are pregnant are at high risk for serious complications with their pregnancy including premature delivery and stillbirth.
While the eggs have not been recalled, public health officials are urging people to be wary when purchasing ready-to-eat egg products that may have prepared with the eggs. Our take: grab a dozen raw eggs and hard boil them at home.
