Visit Katz's Delicatessen, Home of the Famous Scene in "When Harry Met Sally..."

When it's safe to travel again, you should definitely consider a trip to Katz's Delicatessen in New York City if you'd like to try one of the best pastrami on rye sandwiches you'll ever have. Especially if you're a fan of the film "When Harry Met Sally...," the place is worth a pilgrimage, but even if you've never seen it, Katz's deli should be on your list of places to visit on the Lower East Side in Manhattan if you ever find yourself there.

What is Katz's Delicatessen?

Katz's is a kosher-style delicatessen in the Big Apple. According to the restaurant's website, "a small deli by the name of Iceland Brothers was established on Ludlow Street in New York's Lower East Side by the Iceland brothers" back in 1888. Eventually, a man named Willy Katz joined the enterprise in 1903, and the name was changed to "Iceland & Katz." Later, Willy and his brother, Ben, bought out the Iceland brothers, and the place became known by its current name.

In the 1930s, the location was moved across the street thanks to the New York City subway's Houston Street Line construction, and it's still on that side of the street today. Its current address is 205 East Houston Street, and you can go check it out any time. There is also an "auxiliary location" in City Point development's DeKalb Market Hall in Brooklyn, Wikipedia notes.

What Can You Eat at Katz's?

"We only select the best cuts of beef for our corned beef, pastrami, brisket, and other fine foods," the delicatessen's website boasts. Its online menu lists everything from pastrami sandwiches to bagels to Jewish culinary favorites like knish, matzo ball soup, and latkes. Whether you're in the mood for a good knoblewurst sandwich or something simple like a side of coleslaw, they've got you covered.

What About That Scene From "When Harry Met Sally..."?

The restaurant has fun with it! In fact, the table where Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal sat in the movie is marked with a sign that says, "Where Harry met Sally... hope you have what she had! Enjoy!" If that's not enough to make you plan a visit, we don't know how else to convince you!
