Jarritos Soda: Everything You've Ever Wanted to Know About This Mexican Soft Drink

Texans are very passionate and opinionated about food. Ask one where the best barbecue is and you'll get a ten-minute lecture on brisket. Looking for the best taco? Everyone and their mother has an opinion on the matter. But nothing is as heated as the debate on which Jarritos soda is the best. Created in Mexico, Jarritos soda has been selling its fruity soft drinks since 1950 and it is considered one of Mexico's greatest brands. Once you have a taste, there's no wonder Jarritos flavors have somewhat of a cult following.

What is Jarritos Soda?

Created with natural sugar and sold in glass bottles, Jarritos Fruit Soda was founded by Don Francisco "El Güero" Hill in 1950. In 1989, the Mexican soda began exporting to the United States, where it grew in popularity in bordering states and with Latino customers. According to the 2009 edition of the book Mexico Greatest Brands, 6000 bottles of Jarritos are shipped across the border each minute.

Their claim to fame? Being the first company to sell a carbonated tamarind commercial soft drink. The bottles themselves are beautiful and feature three little jugs or jarritos. Tamarind is one of the flavors of Mexico, a tropical fruit popular for its combo of tangy, sweet, and sour flavors. It's used in sauces, drinks, desserts, and tastes pretty dang delicious in a bubbly soda. The bottles themselves are beautiful and feature three little jugs, or jarritos in Spanish. Jarritos come in a number of tropical, fruity flavors like guava, passionfruit and tamarind. A Jarritos Soda is the perfect refreshing soft drink for the summer.
