How to Shred Carrots for Delicious Salads

If you want to make a salad recipe full of goodies like green onions, bell peppers, zucchini, and other veggies that are chock full of things like vitamin A and vitamin C, one of those other veggies you might want to include are shredded carrots.

Grated carrots are great when it comes to health and wellness diet factors, like if you're trying to improve your dietary fiber or potassium intake. They're linked to lower cholesterol levels and better eye health and, of course, they're gluten-free!

So let's say you're making a carrot salad or a slaw with carrots and you only have large or baby carrots, not ones that someone (or, more likely, a machine) has gone through the trouble of shredding. It's very easy to get shredded carrots for whatever dish you need them for, and the total time to make them will account for barely anything out of your meal prep time!

How Do You Shred Carrots?

One of the easiest ways to shred carrots is to use a box grater. Once you've determined how much you need based on your recipe or serving sizes — one large carrot equals about one cup of shredded carrot — all you need to do is wash them, then cut off the tops and bottoms of the vegetables.

Next, take off the skins of each of the carrots with a vegetable peeler. If you don't have one, you can do this carefully with a knife instead. Put your grater on a clean surface with something underneath it to catch your carrot shreds like a small bowl, then gently grate. That's it! Be careful not to cut yourself, and you should have a pile of shredded carrots in no time.

You can also use a food processor to shred carrots, or a plane grater if that's what you have on hand instead. With a processor, you'd do all the above steps through peeling the carrots, then cut them up onto smaller pieces before throwing them in the kitchen appliance to do its thing.
