If you were a Friends fan, Central Perk has a special place in your heart. And the first time you visited NYC, you searched in vain for the cafe that inspired the sitcom's beloved coffee shop. Truth is, not many coffee shops in NYC are that spacious and that empty. But, still, the show elevated couch-anchored coffee shop and a good cup of joe to new levels.
And while the cups at Central Perk were likely empty, one Friends super fan set out to count just how many cups of coffee each character would have consumed over 10 seasons had they been real.
London writer Kit Lovelace dedicated a whole lot of time to watching all 236 episodes counting cups. He shared his findings on Twitter in an amazing chart broken down by character and then season. Both put Phoebe in the lead with 227 cups. As Lovelace explained via Twitter:
"If they were somewhere where there was no coffee (Ross giving a lecture; Monica catering an event etc), I would fast forward through the scene keeping an eye out for any potential mugs or cups. Any Central Perk scene, or apartment scene where they were eating and drinking I watched."
Rachel, shockingly, came in dead last for coffee consumption. Probably because she was the one actually serving the coffee. (Anyone who has waited tables knows that her numbers would have been higher in real life.)
Wanna know how much that would cost the Friends had they actually had to pay for all that coffee? Lovelace figured that out, too, using an episode where Monica had to pay a $4.12 check for a coffee and a scone as reference.
Don't worry, he explains. The Friends were good tippers.
