It's time to celebrate! According to dunnhumby, the global leader in customer data science, H-E-B Grocery store is now the number one U.S. grocery retailer above Trader Joe's, Amazon, Walmart, and Costco. Headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, H-E-B stores (Here Everything's Better) have been serving Texan families since 1905, when founder Florence Butt started the chain as C.C. Butt Grocery Store in Kerrville, Texas. Today the grocery chain boasts 340 locations in Texas and in Mexico.

H-E-B Grocery Named # 1 U.S. Grocery Chain

Grocery chains are evaluated on the following attributes: price, quality, digital, operations, convenience, discounts/rewards and speed. Along with the data, over 7,000 U.S. households were surveyed. Together the dunnhumby Retailer Preference Index (RPI) is created.

According to their findings, regional supermarkets are gaining traction against nation brands due to their "sustained focus and excellence on assortment relevance". From a consumer's point-of-view, I love regional grocery stores more than national chains because it caters to the customers at a local level.

One of the most important findings is that leading traditional regional grocers are experiencing a resurgence in customer preference, by winning with relevance and convenience," said Jose Gomes, President of North America for dunnhumby. "If they can compete on price and quality — the value core for grocers — they are especially well-positioned to fend off the growing threat of non-traditional players. This also leaves them better insulated against an economic downturn. In the end, there is no 'one size fits all' approach to winning in this market, and retailers with Customer First strategies are most likely to fare best.
