Texas Restaurant Hosts Drive-Thru Fiesta During Coronavirus Pandemic

Started in 1891 as a one-parade event to honor heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto, Fiesta San Antonio is one of the biggest Texas events of the year. More than 3 million people take part and over 100 events take place all over San Antonio as floats float down the riverwalk. However, this year due to the Texas covid-19 Stay-at-Home Order, all Fiesta events have been canceled to stop the spread of coronavirus. But that hasn't stopped some Texans from celebrating and opening up drive-thru fiesta locations complete with chicken-on-a-stick, Fiesta medals, and parades.

Mi Familia at the Rim Hosts Drive-Thru Fiesta for Texans

One restaurant opening up to celebrate Fiesta is Mi Familia at the Rim, the newest restaurant owned by the Cortez family. "Everyone's doing drive-thru, so it was just a natural thing for us to (do to) keep the fiesta spirit alive," said Manuel Moreno Jr., corporate general manager for La Familia Cortéz shared with KSAT. "Being in the market for 80 years, we've been a part of Fiesta, you know, since it started. We didn't want that (to) stop."

The staff at Mi Familia at the Rim set two lanes for cars to visit 10 different booths in their restaurant parking lot. Each booth features fiesta foods like corn in a cup, turkey legs, gorditas, churros, and tacos. As for drinks, the restaurant is selling frozen margaritas, micheladas, mangonadas, and pina coladas.

San Antonians can even stop at the medal booth and pick up their favorite design. All proceeds go towards the San Antonio Food Bank, so its a great way to get your fiesta fix and help out the community at the same time.

Before jumping in your car make sure to check out the restaurant's Facebook page for the theme of the day. Friday and Saturday are parade nights and Mi Familia at the Rim encourages visitors to decorate their cars into floats. The best float gets a $100 gift card, so decorate your truck and head over to celebrate Fiesta.
