Dilly Dog

Ask a Texas Ranger fan what their favorite ballpark food is and you'll probably hear the words, Dilly Dog.

Ask a Texas Ranger fan what their favorite ballpark food is at Globe Life Park and you'll probably hear the words, Dilly Dog. Invented at Globe Life Park in Arlington, the Dilly Dog is "a Best Maid dill pickle cored and stuffed with an Angus beef jumbo dog that is then battered and deep fried." Oh yea, our mouths are already drooling from this corn dog. The MLB is starting up again, and while the Texas Rangers have opened their stadium to 100%, some stadiums across the states are still partially shut down to spectators.

The treat is also a favorite at the South Carolina State Fair, where the hot dog and fried pickle combo is called the Dilly Dilly Dog. The Indiana State Fair also sells a dish of the same name. Disney also just came out with their own version of the pickled stuffed corn dog recipe and it includes peanut butter to dip it in!

How to Make a Dilly Dog at Home

First things first, you gotta grab yourself a jar of Best Maid pickles. If you don't have any in your local grocery store, I highly recommend heading over to Amazon and picking up a jar. Believe me, it makes this pickle corn dog. If you are making a DIY Dilly Dog recipe you gotta make it right!

Next, grab an apple corer and core of the middle of the pickle. Snack on the insides of the pickle. Stuff the hot dog into the pickle and place on a stick.

Meanwhile, create your corndog batter by mixing together cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, buttermilk, egg, honey, and vegetable oil. Whisk the batter together then transfer it to a drinking glass. This makes it easier to dip the entire dilly dog in the batter before frying.

As you create your corndog batter, preheat a dutch oven filled with 2 quarts of vegetable oil to 350F. Once the oil is hot, dip the dogs in the batter and carefully drop into the oil, turning halfway through cooking to ensure it is evenly cooked. It should take 3-5 minutes total to cook the Dilly Dogs.

Remove the dogs from the hot oil and drain on paper towels or a cooling rack. Serve with mustard or ketchup.
