Chip and Joanna Gaines Get Real About Their Marriage

Chip and Joanna Gaines are famous for their HGTV show Fixer Upper, along with their creation of the Magnolia Network. However, this celebrity pair is a power couple in more than ways than one- along with being wildly successful in their business, they have a love story to rival all others. Although Chip and Joanna Gaines' marriage has had its ups and downs, the two have never considered quitting.

18 Years of Marriage

The founders of Magnolia Table, Magnolia Journal and Magnolia Market have been married for almost 20 years and are still going strong. Along with running their home renovation enterprises, they have five adorable kids; Drake, Duke, Crew, Ella Rose and Emmie Kay. Fans enjoy peeks of the Gaines' wonderful family on their shows and social media accounts, and we can never get enough.

Chip & Joanna's 18th wedding anniversary was in June, and they got real about the ups and downs of marriage. Despite the hard times that come from raising a family, maintaining a marriage and working together professionally, the Gaineses have never considered divorce.

In an interview with Access Hollywood on July 15th, they spoke about the launch of the Magnolia Network on Discovery +. The Fixer Upper couple also opened up about their relationship, portraying honestly the struggles of marriage.

Chip said, "Things have definitely been challenging, we're not perfect, we have issues and trials and errors like anybody." However, he added that "throwing in the towel is not something that honestly ever even comes to mind, and I would say that it happened pretty early on in our relationship. We just thought that it's interesting that divorce and leaving one another is not really an option for us."

A Love Story

Chip and Joanna Gaines have made it work for almost 20 years, but their relationship had its twists and turns from the start. Chip and Joanna both attended Baylor University, but they met through Joanna's side hustle.

Joanna worked at her dad's Firestone Tire store in Waco, Texas, and her dad lovingly kept a pic of the family behind the counter. During college, Joanna began appearing in commercials for her Dad's business. One day, Chip went into the shop, and immediately recognized Joanna's picture from the commercials he'd seen. As Chip Gaines tells it, "Her dad made the mistake of putting a pic of the family behind the counter at his shop. I knew I'd marry her one day just by the picture on the wall."

Chip began taking every opportunity to go to the shop, often making random excuses, all for a chance at meeting Joanna in person. When he finally met her there for the first time, his line was "Hey, you're the girl from the commercials."

As romantic as the story begins, there were a few bumps in the road before Chip and Joanna became the adorable, successful duo they are today. For one, Chip was an hour late to their first date. Then, he waited months to call Joanna for the second date, all because of a bet with a friend over who could hold out longest before calling their dates back.

Once they got through this and began dating, Joanna was the more guarded of the two, and Chip openly admits that he fell in love first. Joanna's book The Magnolia Story goes into more detail about their life together.

"In It Forever"

Chip admits that during a "real estate crisis" in 2006 to 2010, they "had multiple opportunities to quit and throw in the towel." However, they had decided early on in their relationship that divorce wasn't on the table, and they've stuck to it ever since.

Chip has told fans that he and Joanna are "in it forever," saying that the secret to their success is perseverance.

"Jo and I show up every day and sometimes it's right and sometimes it's not, but we keep putting one foot in front of the other," he says. "Our superpower is that, Jo and I are not quitters."
