Chick-fil-A is Bringing Back 3 Fish Favorites For Lent

It's not all about the chicken sandwich and waffle fries this month at Chick-fil-A! For those that are observing Lent, (or love seafood!) the fast food chain has added four limited-time crispy cod-based items to the menu, one of which is the famed Chick-fil-A fish sandwich.

Chick-fil-A adds Fish Sandwich to Menu for Lent

According to Chick-fil-A, the fish entrees will be available at select Chick-fil-a locations between Ash Wednesday, Wednesday, February 26, and Easter, Saturday, April 11, 2020. The new menu includes the Traditional Fish Sandwich, which is served on a buttered bun with two cod filets and dill pickles, the Deluxe Fish Sandwich which comes with tomato, lettuce, and American cheese, and boxed 2- and 3-count fish entrees served with waffle potato fries. All items can be served with tartar sauce as well.

Not every Chick-fil-A will be serving these items, so make sure to call your local restaurant to check availability.

Why Do We Eat Fish for Lent?

For six Fridays every Spring, Catholics abstain from eating beef, chicken, and pork to honor the sacrifices and suffering of Jesus. The tradition of Lent started in the Roman times when fish and vegetables were plenty and eating beef and chicken was something only the upper class could afford. Lasting 40 days (the same number of days Jesus spent in the desert), Lent is a time to give up something you regularly enjoy to pay your respects.

Many fast food chains, like McDonald's, Popeyes, Wendy's, Arby's, and Dairy Queen add fish items to their menus during Lent. Did you know the Filet-o-fish was invented specifically for the observance of Lent? Yes! In 1962 Lou Groen, a McDonald's franchise owner created the sandwich and brought it to Ray Croc to add to the menu. On the first day, 350 fish sandwiches were sold, and the menu item stuck, starting the fast food fish sandwich revolution.
