How To Make Delicious Doughnuts Out of Refrigerated Canned Biscuits

Everyone has a favorite food that brings them back to their childhood. For me, it's canned biscuit doughnuts. I would be lured from my pink bed with the scent of fried dough and sugar. In the kitchen, my father, a mug of steaming hot black coffee in one hand and a pair of tongs in the other, would be waiting for me to help shake the brown paper bag filled with cinnamon sugar to coat the breakfast treats. He still makes biscuit donuts every Christmas morning and I can't help but be transported back to my childhood.

What Are Canned Biscuit Doughnuts?

Unlike traditional homemade doughnuts which require you to make a dough and let it rise, canned biscuit donuts use refrigerated biscuit dough (found in tubes near the butter) which is fried in vegetable oil until golden brown and served with either cinnamon sugar, powdered sugar, or homemade frosting.

First things first, get yourself some canned biscuit dough, (Pillsbury is a good option) and find yourself a small round cookie cutter. Remove the biscuits from the can and use the cookie cutter to make a doughnut hole.

If your cookie cutters are stored away with the rest of your holiday decorations, like mine usually are, use your fingers to make the donut holes. It won't be as perfect, but it sure is homely looking.

Meanwhile, heat up your dutch oven with enough oil for deep frying. I like to use about 2 inches. Heat to 350?. In a small bowl prepare your frosting with confectioners' sugar, vanilla extract, and milk or place a sugar mixture of sugar and cinnamon in a brown lunch bag.

Once the fryer is heated, add the donuts and donut holes and fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes and less time for the holes. Remove from the hot oil with a strainer and immediately place into the brown bag if covering with sugar. If using frosting, place on paper towels and decorate when cooled.

With a short prep time and cook time, these doughnuts are a great treat when you have a few extra minutes in the morning. All you need is a can of biscuits, some sugar, and oil.
