How to Make Your Own Cake Mix Substitute for DIY Baked Goods

Cake mixes are perfect for when you're in the mood for cake, cupcakes or brownies but don't feel like making the whole recipe from scratch. Although classics like Betty Crocker are usually the fool-proof option when it comes to boxed cake mixes, sometimes it feels better to know exactly what's in your mix. Plus, sometimes it's just too much effort to go to the store or on Amazon for a box of cake mix. Here's how to make a cake mix substitute for your own homemade baked goods.

A homemade cake mix is a great way to cut down on prep time- just pull it out of your pantry when you're feeling some baked goods. White cake mix is the most classic of cake mixes, perfect for using buttermilk frosting, buttercream frosting, chocolate frosting, and any array of sprinkles you like.

What Can I Use In Place of Cake Mix?

To make your own white cake mix substitute, you'll need all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and powdered milk. Here's the recipe with amounts! To make it taste a bit more like yellow cake mix, add in a teaspoon of vanilla extract. If you prefer chocolate cake mix, here's a delicious recipe, with a serving size of one cake.

To make your own substitute for a cake mix recipe, you'll simply sift all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl. Then, keep the mix in an airtight container at room temperature, using a ziplock bag or mason jar.

Once you're ready to make your DIY cake mix into a cake, you'll take it out of the pantry and mix in the ingredients that the recipe calls for, often a cup water, cup vegetable oil and eggs. Pour the cake batter into a cake pan, bundt pan or cupcake pan depending on what you're making. Bake until a toothpick comes out of the cake clean, and enjoy your cake made from your own cake mix substitute!
