Balcones Distilling Releases First-Ever All-Texas Single Malt Whisky

It's an exciting day to be a Texan who loves whisky. Blacklands Malt and Balcones Distilling have teamed up and are proud to announce their groundbreaking project of creating single malt whisky made from Texas-grown barley. This beverage is a first for the state of Texas, which has been in the works since 2012 when Blacklands Malt and Texas A&M University began researching brewing and distilling grains that could be grown in Texas. Now, the day has come to try High Plains Texas Single Malt.

Earning over 350 National and International tasting awards, you would have never thought this distilling company got its start in an old welding shop under the 17th street bridge in Waco, Texas. Today, The Balcones Distillery features a state-of-the-art tasting room and distillery inside the historic Texas Fireproof Storage Company building located in the heart of downtown. The company prides itself on introducing Baby Blue, a blue corn whisky, as the first Texas whisky to hit the market since prohibition.

About Blacklands Malt

Before Blacklands Malt's founding in 2012, no barley, wheat or rye was grown and malted in Texas for use in beer and spirits. Named the first malthouse in modern Texas history, Blacklands Malt has been the driving force behind the revitalization of Texas-grown malting barley statewide, providing brewers with access to local malt for the first time in Texas history.

"Our goal is to bring forward unique, Texas-infused whiskies that not only differentiate themselves in flavor but also inspire real community impact by supporting Texas agriculture, manufacturing, and the growing craft malt industry," said Brandon Ade, founder of Blacklands Malt.

Together the two companies have created High Plains Texas Single Malt, which features aromas of stewed apples, sauternes, honeycomb, and light mink oil.

"The two years of aging have been worth the wait," said Jared Himstedt, head distiller of Balcones Distilling. "We ended up with some very welcome subtle nuances during maturation with this Texas Malt that we're excited about."

The High Plains Texas Single Malt will be exclusively available at Balcones Distilling in Waco, Texas for $80 starting on June 15.
