Anthony Mayse and his family visited the local Santa Claus on Main Street in Forest City, North Carolina when the unthinkable happened. Instead of a kind, heartwarming experience, Mayse's visit with Santa Claus ended in tears and a feeling of disrespect.
While sitting on Santa's lap, Mayse started to tell him the gifts he wanted for Christmas, and like a scene straight from A Christmas Story, Santa Claus looked at Mayse and told him to "lay off the hamburgers and French fries."
As ABC 11 reported, the reference to Mayse's stature and weight was completely disrespectful and now, his mother Ashley believes the local Santa should be fired. In her words, it was "very rude. I've never seen anything like it."
Mayse asked for an iPod Touch and drone before he was body-shamed by Santa. In Mayse's own words, "And when I got done, he said, 'lay off the hamburgers and French fries. And that really just disrespected me and I felt awful."
When that happened, PIX11 reported that Anthony immediately left and started crying. He tore up the picture he took with Santa and said, "It affected me so bad that I was crying until I went to bed that night. And I want to say to him, 'You don't disrespect a 9-year-old. Even though what shape and size you are, it doesn't matter.'"
The town manager stated that Santa later apologized to the Mayse family and his supervisor, and he has resigned.
No child should ever feel slighted, and it breaks our hearts to hear this story so close to the holiday season.
