Weight Watchers is Launching a Low-Calorie White Wine

The holiday season is always a tricky time for those of us who are looking to stay trim all season long. With all of the temptations of rum cake and pecan pie, it can be difficult to feel comfortable indulging while you enjoy time with family. Your life is your choice and your weight is conversation only between you and your doctor, but if you are hoping to stay on track this year with your diet plan, Weight Watchers has good news for you to make the season merry and bright. The diet brand is launching a lower-calorie white wine called Cense with fewer points per glass than regular wine.

While wine might seem like an odd choice for Weight Watchers, it actually makes the most sense. According to Ryan Nathan, Vice President of Products, Licensing, and Ecommerce at Weight Watchers, wine is the second most-tracked beverage in the program. Coffee, unsurprisingly, is first. Partnering with wine company Truett-Hurst in 2015, Weight Watchers wanted to develop a lower-calorie wine that clocked in under 3 SmartPoints.

Cense Sauvignon Blanc, at 85 calories per 5-ounce serving, is the first wine release. The wine is described as being a "fresh and bright wine with aromas of lemon and lime, crisp acidity, and juicy grapefruit flavors." A 2016 bottle from Marlborough, New Zealand, the wine is made with 100 percent sauvignon blanc grapes. This is the first iteration of Cense's low-calorie wine, and more varieties, like a low-calorie red wine, are on the horizon.

The wine-making process to develop this low-calorie wine, and as Phil Hurst, cofounder, president, and CEO of Truett-Hurst, said in a press release,

"To develop Cense, we leveraged an innovative technology that captures the compounds that make up the flavor and aroma of a wine, holding them aside while removing excessive alcohol; this process allows us to reduce both calories and SmartPoints per serving without compromising on taste or bouquet."

There is less alcohol content in this bottle that typical vinos. Where a standard sauvignon blanc might have 12.5 to 13 percent alcohol content, Cense has 9.6 percent. This is especially great for those not just concerned with weight loss, and those who just enjoy one glass or two during a special occasion. Of course, portion control matters when it comes to wine so check out these wine glasses that accurately label serving sizes.

You can find Cense for $14 in Kroger stores, and you can also buy it online for $15 a bottle. There is a discount of 10 percent for a purchase of three bottles or more; and a discount of 20 percent for a purchase of 6 bottles or more. If you and a few others you know pitch in for a shipment, it might actually be the best way to go about ordering it online. Cheers to healthy living this season, whatever that may look like for you!
