Finally, the Beer Made for a Post-Workout Recovery

What side do you take when it comes to the post-workout recovery beer? Do you swear by its healing powers or do you consider it to be complete hog wash? If you're the prior, you'll be ecstatic to know your claim is about to get a boost of support because an electrolyte enhanced beer has been born.

The post-workout replenishing craft beer is appropriately named Fastest Known Time - FTK for short. The brainchild of California brewery Sufferfest Beer Company, FTK pale ale is considered to be the first electrolyte, nutrient rich beer. The idea behind it is to give beer-loving athletes a beer they can drink while also benefiting from its nutrients. While we may not all be athletes, we can still get on board with that.

So what is it about FTK that makes it stand out from other, dare I say, normal brews? According to Gear Junkie, this beer is brewed with black currants giving it more than double the dose of vitamin C it would get from an orange. It's also enhanced with 65mg of added sodium to help with muscle cramping and cell hydration. This is a key factor in promoting it as a recovery beverage. An International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism study found that by changing the electrolyte content, beer will have a less dehydrating effect.

The beer doesn't stop there. It contains less than 10 parts per million of gluten so it's considered to be gluten removed in the United States. Also, it has 12.5 grams carbohydrates, 1.7 grams protein, and contains 165 calories in a 12 ounce serving. For all those beer geeks out there, it also has 40.5 IBUs and 5.5 percent alcohol. Move over Gatorade, it looks like FKT has come to town.

While this may be Sufferfest's first electrolyte enhanced beer, all their beers are brewed for those with an active lifestyle. Founded by runner and former Strava Director of Marketing Caitlin Landesberg, Sufferfest Beer Company was the answer to delicious gluten-free beers that support an active lifestyle. Their beer lineup features other brews like Repeat Kolsch brewed with bee pollen, Flyby pilsner which is ideal for a post-run beverage, and Taper IPA made for rest days.

Beer lovers may not have needed another reason to drink beer, but Sufferfest has certainly given them one. I for one am willing to be a guinea pig for the cause. While this may not be your average post-workout recovery drink, it sounds a whole lot more natural than drinking the typical neon colored American sports drink. Of course, we could opt for something like coconut water for the natural electrolyte content the body needs for recovery, but where's the fun in that?

If you still consider drinking beer for recovery to be hog wash, try FTK for yourself and let us know what you think.
