Some days, you need more than just caffeine to get you going. Unfortunately, despite earlier reports, Starbucks seems to have halted all plans to begin selling alcohol in its stores. Lucky for you, we’ve got a DIY drink list that will make it all better. Spike your Starbucks the right way with these simple liquor pairings.
Your tailgates, backyard barbecues, and early brunch events will definitely thank you. Also, if you’re having a morning wedding, consider thise to be your DIY planning guide to a boozy coffee brunch.
1. Black Coffee
For something simple, give your morning Joe a jolt. Black coffee goes great with Bailey’s Irish Cream, Kahlúa (a coffee liqueur), as well as rum, bourbon and whiskey.
Classic “Irish Coffee” is made with fresh-brewed hot coffee, brown sugar and a shot of Irish whiskey, topped with a layer of thick cream. Grab a recipe here.
Mocha – a cafe latte (espresso and hot milk) plus chocolate – is made all the better with whiskey, which will pair well with just about any espresso drink.
Bailey’s and Kahlúa are also good options.
3. Caramel Latte/Macchiato
Starbucks’ Caramel Macchiato combines espresso, steamed milk, vanilla syrup and a rich caramel drizzle – great to pair with caramel- or vanilla-flavored vodka.
For something a little less sweet, whiskey works wonders.
If you really need to get going, espresso and alcohol should do the trick.
Whiskey and coffee liqueur are the obvious go-tos, but rum and vodka also offer another world of possibilities.
5. Pumpkin Spice Latte
Not too be too #basic, but pumpkin-spice season is once again upon us.
Spike your seasonal sip with a chocolate liqueur, a whiskey or, for those who want to go all-in, Kahlúa’s very own Pumpkin Spice Liqueur.
6. Peppermint Mocha
Since we’re on the subject of seasonal drinks, Starbucks is also offering its Peppermint Mocha through the holidays.
Pair it with a pull of peppermint schnapps!
7. Hot Chocolate
It’s getting cold outside, and when temperatures drop, nothing warms quite like hot chocolate … except for boozy hot chocolate.
The classics – Bailey’s and Kahlúa – work well, as do whiskey and bourbon. For something a little spicy, try cinnamon schnapps or cinnamon whiskey (Fireball, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire, Jim Beam Kentucky Fire, etc.) instead.
8. Cool Lime Starbucks Refresher
Don’t forget – Starbucks sells more than coffee, meaning you’ve got even more cocktail options.
The Cool Lime Refresher goes great with a neutral spirit, like vodka (flavored or not), or use tequila instead for an almost-margarita!
9. Brewed Tea
In the wintertime, there’s no remedy for cold quite like a Hot Toddy. Grab a hot brewed tea from Starbucks, add lemon, a little bit of honey and a healthy pour of whiskey for the perfect holiday cure-all.
10. Teavana Shaken Iced Passion Tango Tea Lemonade
Add tequila, rum or vodka to Starbucks’ Teavana Shaken Iced Passion Tango Tea Lemonade for a tipsy taste of the tropics!
