Who doesn’t enjoy a freebie? And even better if it’s a doughnut. The basis of National Doughnut Day actually got its start way back in 1938 as a fundraiser for The Salvation Army in Chicago, Illinois. The goal for the day was to honor The Salvation Army “lassies” of World War I who served doughnuts to soldiers. The day was also to raise funds for those in need during the Great Depression.
During World War I the Salvation Army sent 250 volunteers to France to serve baked good and provide writing supplies and stamps to those on the front line. The women served doughnuts to the men and got known as, “doughnut girls” to the enlisted men.
Today, National Doughnut Day (not to be confused with International Jelly-Filled Doughnut Day or National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day) is still a fundraiser for the Chicago Salvation Army, and other businesses have stepped up to donate to the cause as well.
To celebrate the doughnut girls, many doughnut shops across the United States are giving away a free donut to customers. This isn’t a complete list (there might be a rad local donut shop participating) and locations may vary.
On June 1, the “Hot Now” chain is serving up one free doughnut of choice for customers. Grab their new cookie inspired doughnuts or go classic with an Original Glazed.
Purchase a beverage and Dunkin’ will give you a classic donut free of charge. Check to see if your local restaurant is participating in this offer.
The Outer Banks-based chain is offering either a bare, cinnamon sugar, or powdered sugar donut free of charge for their customers. Customers will also receive a buy one, get one free coupon to use before June 17.
This Canadian brand is celebrating too! If you live in the New York, Detroit, or Columbus, Ohio areas, check out which location is the “secret location” and ask for “Gold Timbits”. The winner will receive free donuts for the entire year.
Named one of the best donut shops in America by Thrillist and NY Post, Sugar Shack is celebrating National Donut Day by giving away donuts every single day of the year except on June 1. Check their facebook to see if you are eligible for a free donut.
Stop in between 5 am and 10 am to pick up a free doughnut with beverage purchase. Customers can choose flavors such as Blueberry Cake, Glazed, Cocoa Coated and Cocoa Filled.
While the donut shop advertises free donuts, there’s no indication of which donuts are available and if there is a purchase necessary. We suggest calling up your local LaMar’s to find out more.
