As an icon to the burger world, the Big Mac has been the front-runner of fast-food burgers since the 1960s both in America and abroad. Consisting of two beef patties, lettuce, American cheese, pickles, chopped onions, and of course, the "secret" Big Mac sauce. The driving force behind McDonald's popularity, there is simply nothing like the Big Mac and the mystery from its sauce has caused many home cooks to wrack their brains for a recipe.

However, this sauce is no longer a secret and you too can make this special sauce condiment recipe in the comfort of your home with little prep time. In fact, fast food chain McDonald's Canada made an entire video showing viewers how to make the famous sandwich complete with McDonald's special dipping sauce at home. If you want answers, McDonald's Canada has them. On their site, YourQuestions.Ca.com, McDonald's answers questions sent in from customers from all across the country. Questions range from, "Do you really use 100% beef or is that just the name of the company you get your beef from?" to "How real are your real fruit smoothies?".

Today's original recipe video focuses on the popular question: "What's in the sauce that is in the Big Mac?" asked by Christine H. of Oshawa. Dan Coudreaut, McDonald's executive chef, answers that question with the entire Big Mac recipe, special sauce and all.

One thing that the Big Mac sauce recipe video doesn't mention are measurements, however, there are numerous recipes across the internet. McDonald's secret sauce starts out with mayonnaise, a tablespoon or so of dill pickle relish, and a helping of yellow mustard. A hint of white vinegar is whisked in to provide a bit of flavor contrast.

Aromatics such as garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika are whisked into the mixture, tinting the sauce to its signature color. This copycat recipe almost like a French dressing or a Thousand Island dressing but with its own little twist.

How to Assemble a Big Mac

Once the Big Mac special sauce is prepared, it's time to work on the burger itself. Two all-beef patties are cooked on the stovetop until nice and browned. Meanwhile prepare the minced white onion to go on the burger.

Once the patty is cooked, prepare the Big Mac by spreading the Big Mac special sauce on two of the three sesame seed buns. Sprinkle the minced onion on the sauce and top with lettuce, cheese, pickles and the two burger patties. Press together with the top bun and hold on tight.

While this sauce may be delicious, it's technically not the real deal. McDonald's uses an original recipe that includes an ingredient list of soybean oil, high fructose corn syrup, xanthan gum, propylene glycol alginate, calcium chloride, and many more ingredients we cannot pronounce.

I think I'll stick with the homemade version and slather it on. Refrigerate leftover sauce in an airtight container.
