The I-27 is one of the northernmost highways in Texas. Spanning the stretch between Lubbock and Amarillo, there are only a few towns in between to dot the north Texas plains. Some of the bigger towns you’ll pass are New Deal, Abernathy, Hale Center, Plainview, Kress, Tulia, Happy, and Canyon.
In 2005, the I-27 was officially designated the Marshall Formby Memorial Highway after former attorney and Texas State Senator Marshall Formby.
Still, even though the road has a posh, alternative name, making it through the 124 miles of highway if you forget to pack a snack can be not so luxurious. So make sure that you know where you are going to stop when you’re driving through the great open plains.
To give you a guide of where you can stop in these sparsely-populated north Texas towns, here are 7 of the best candidates.

From Yelp: “If you like traditional diner fare they do it right! All American classics HOMEMADE! Don’t be afraid of the line, word has gotten out, it moves fast!”

A Little Slice of Heaven Cafe
1411 Ave D, Abernathy, Texas
From Facebook review: “Great big flavors in a small town. Cheeseburger was awesome and crystal had the chili cheeseburger, and it by far was probably one of the best chili cheeseburgers I’ve ever tasted.”
Don’t forget the pie though. The pie is great.
701 N Columbia St, Plainview, Texas
From Yelp: “The food was the best authentic Mexican food I have had since coming to Texas. Hard to find places like this.”
So many taquerias to choose from in Plainview, only few worth visiting.
1001 N Interstate 27, Plainview, Texas
From Yelp: “I was very surprised by the excellent food at this establishment. The staff was courteous, gracious, and cleanly. The restaurant has a certain ambience, cleanliness and overall appeal this surprising for such a small market. Extra bonus, if you love that Horchata make sure you get some.”
This little gem is worth your #tacotuesday posts.
130 N Maxwell Ave, Tulia, Texas

When the food looks like what’s in the photos, you know you’re about to have a good meal.
Feldman’s Wrong Way Diner
2100 N 2nd Ave, Canyon, TX
From Yelp: “My husband and I have been here twice and we absolutely LOVE Feldman’s. They have the best ribs I’ve ever had. They were so tender and full of flavor.”
Y0u also need to try the chicken fried steak. Unexpectedly well presented and delicious.
Green Chile Willy’s Grill
13651 Interstate 27, Amarillo, Texas
