Self Sustainability: Grow a Garden with This Self-Watering Hydroponic Pot

Do you love fresh fruits and vegetables, but lack a green thumb? Or maybe you’re an apartment dweller who doesn’t have access to a nice patch of grass and soil. Whatever your inclination, Botanium wants to take care of gardening for you. This foolproof kit has surpassed its goal on Kickstarter and is heading into production, and you’re going to want one ASAP.

Botanium is a simple hydroponic planter that only requires a desk lamp or LED light to grow inside. Hydroponic means that no soil is needed to promote growth, and the pot even waters the plant automatically as needed. It promises faster growth and no worry about over/under-watering your fledgling plant.

You can grow everything from herbs to fruits and vegetables. Specifically, basil, oregano, and mint will thrive in this pot.

Tomatoes, chilies, and strawberries are also ideal candidates – making for a delicious faux-summer garden year-round. Botanium not only includes the planter, but it also includes the nutrients needed to help the plants survive.

All you have to do is fill the tank with water, add the nutrients provided, fill with the growing medium, plant a seed, connect to an electrical outlet, and let the little seed thrive! Botanium is working to bring urban gardening to everyones’ homes and only needs a light source apart from an incandescent light bulb to encourage healthy growth.

Why did Botanium nix the idea of soil? Check it out.

Additionally, Botanium cites research that shows “hydroponically grown food can contain more vitamins than soil-grown food.”

Wide Open Eats pledged to their campaign and we can’t wait to give it a go in the office. What do you think of this idea?
