If you’ve been on a quest to find a sauce that will enhance your meat and not smother it, H-E-B discovered it. F.U.B.A.R WarPig BBQ (For Use on Butts and Ribs) is a creation by Dennis Butterworth that has only graced H-E-B shelves since January. So if you haven’t heard of this brand before, that’s why.
Hailing from Houston, Butterworth is an ex-Army tank driver who just happens to love barbecue. In fact, he’s so into the process behind the product, that he’s been doing recipe research for years at WarPig BBQ, a Houston competition team that he and several of his Army veteran friends founded in 2009.
Through patience and persistence, Butterworth has created a sauce that is delicious without using additives like corn syrup or liquid smoke. As he told the Houston Chronicle,
“To me, it has a special flavor and color. It puts a beautiful mahogany color on meat that other sauces can’t duplicate. The flavor hits everything on your palate. There’s no imitation liquid smoke in the sauce. Why have that fake smoke flavor put on top of all those natural smoked flavors you worked so hard to create? If you’re looking for a sauce that enhances the meat, that’s what F.U.B.A.R. is.
Although this sauce is the new kid on the block, it managed to win first place, $20,000, and some prime real estate on H-E-B shelves for 2018.
F.U.B.A.R. tied with Lorraine’s Original Mini Texas Pecan Cakes. The $25,000 grand prize was awarded to Skull & Cakebones, a vegan dessert company in Austin. Behind F.U.B.A.R and Lorraine’s, Tamale Addiction, a line of organic tamales from Austin, took second; Mi Tierra Salsa Verde from La Familia Cortez Restaurants in San Antonio came in third.
H-E-B hosts this Quest for Texas Best competition annually. In 2017, 565 entries from more than 200 towns across the state were received.
There were 25 finalists. Competition entries were judged on flavor, customer appeal, value, uniqueness, market potential, and differentiation from current products at most H-E-B stores.
