Craft breweries turning into distilleries is no new thing. For years, the likes of Dogfish Head Brewery, Rogue Ales, and Anchor Brewing Company have been crafting their own spirits. So what’s the next step in brewery innovation when the beer and spirits world has been mastered? Well, that would be beer whiskey.
The process between brewing beer and distilling whiskey are more alike than you may think. Just like beer, whiskey malt is milled, mashed, and fermented. Unlike beer, whiskey then has to be distilled and stored in those fine oak barrels before you can sip and savor.
The concept of whiskey beer opens up a new world of inventive flavors. Imagine taking your favorite beer notes and infusing them into a shot of whiskey. That is precisely what Berkshire Mountain Distillers has in mind.
Hard at work on the Craft Brewers Whiskey Project, Berkshire is in collaboration with 15 breweries taking some of our favorite beers and turning them into whiskey. Berkshire is not the only one turning heads. Seven Stills Brewery and Distillery has been experimenting with a variety of beer styles while Charbay Winery and Distillery has been partnering with Bear Republic in transforming the beloved Racer 5 IPA.
Charbay has in fact been working on turning beer into whiskey since 1999. Aged in white American oak barrels, the pilsner whiskey was a first of many. With the current popularity of craft beer culture, it was only a matter of time before others caught on to the beer whiskey trend. Craft beer is always in search of the next big thing – and whiskey is it.
The only downside is the wait. While a fine craft beer can go from brewhouse to bottle within a few weeks time, aging whiskey takes years. Many years. You can be certain though that when these distillers release their new pride and joy, thirsty beer and whiskey connoisseurs will be ready.
