How Many Dares Would It Take You to Try These 13 Strange Wines?

All over the world, glasses are filled with libations made from the most unusual ingredients that tell a story. Each weird wine reflects the resources that are locally available and the history that is in each glass.

Wine, no matter what it is made from, is an alcoholic beverage that is fermented without the addition of sugars, acids, enzymes, water, or other nutrients. So technically whether you’re using squash, tree sap, or snake bile, as long as its fermented and becomes alcoholic, it’s a wine. Although there will be no harm in saying it’s a weird wine.

What are some of the strangest wines out there? Here are 13 of them.

1. Snake Bile Wine

For the faint of heart, you can opt for the tame version of this beverage where the Vietnamese prepare a snake wine by steeping a venomous snake in rice wine.

However, for adventurous spirits, there is the extremely disconcerting snake bile version. Instead of adding a full snake to the rice wine, all that is added is the greenish-black gallbladder bile from a freshly sliced cobra. That’s one awesomely weird wine.

2. Birch Sap Wine

This wine is most often found in frigid climates where birch trees thrive. Sap is extracted from silver birch trees and fermented into a sparkling wine that’s enjoyed early in the season.

3. Lizard Wine

According to Chinese lore, if you soak a lizard for a year in rice wine or whiskey, the resulting beverage is a cure-all for innumerable ailments.

It remains up for debate on whether or not the alcoholic medicine tastes good.

4. Rose Hip Wine

To make this alcoholic delight, rose hips are shoved into a bottle where they perfume the alcohol with a heady rose scent that is rather enjoyable in small doses.

5. Dandelion Wine

Besides being a novel by Ray Bradbury, this wine is literally brewed from dandelions and can easily be made in your own kitchen. If you’re wondering what it tastes like, it’s a bit like a Chardonnay crossed with corn on the cob.

6. Jalapeño Wine

Jalapeno is good in so many things, including tequila. But in wine? That’s questionable. However, to each their own.

7. Maple Wine

This maple sipping wine can be delightful in the cold winter months when you need to warm in your mouth and your stomach.

This rich, full-bodied wine is an experience you won’t want to miss.

8. Coffee Wine

Everyone loves coffee – in the morning. Everyone loves wine – in the evening.  However, it remains to be seen if they should be combined.

9. Chocolate Orange Wine

At this point, it’s a bit irrelevant if the flavors are all-natural or not. If it’s chocolate orange, you’re going to want to try it.

After all, it will be an experience to sample a traditional candy in wine form.

10. Birthday Cake Wine

This wine is a cocktail of inexpressibly sweet and unidentifiable flavors. Potentially it’s a good idea if you have to decide between dessert and wine, but you really want both.

However, we’ll let your taste buds decide if this weird wine is worth it.

11. Marrow Rum

Marrow Rum is technically a wine that is aged in a hollowed-out zucchini. It’s a little strange and a little genius all at once.

12. Cranberry Wine

Cranberry wine is fruity, delicious, and surprisingly good for your urinary tract.

Plus, a recent Canadian study found that it also contains 99 percent less headache-inducing histamine than red wines.

13. Elderberry Wine

I’ll tell you from experience that this flavor is better than you’d expect.

Especially if you like wine spritzers, using elderberry instead of plain white wine will take your summer sips to the next level.
