The onset of the fried potato was, arguably, also the onset of society as we know it. There is no one right or wrong way to shape your fried potato. Fried potatoes can be thin, thick, or curly. They can be crinkled or in wedge-form, and they can be a regular old Russet or an elegant sweet potato. We love all types of fried potato, but Food Republic recently ranked the various styles.
Yes, to many this list is a controversial ranking of all styles of French fries. To us, though, it’s a critical document in the history of the human race.
Disclaimer: We do not agree with this ranking wholeheartedly. We may have to rank them ourselves…

How can you say no to a face like that?
17. Potato Tornado
Yes, the potato tornado may blow your taste buds away. We enjoy every inch of this spiral skewered fried potato.
16. Pommes Soufflés
Puffed fries? We’re in. While we don’t see these very often, we’re trying to think of a clever way to “Freedom fry” them. Puffed patriot potatoes will have to do.
15. Cottage Fries
Thick-cut fries sliced up on a corrugated slicer are another variety we don’t see too often. After seeing the above photo, though, we’re on the next bus to @twobirdschicken to try them.
14. Chili Cheese Fries
It's fricken HOT in LA. It's hot enough to melt the cheese on my chili cheese fries fo sho!!! . . ?Follow @eatwithnorma . . . #eatwithnorma #burgercitygrill #chili #chilicheesefries #pastramiburger #chocolateshake #5 #bonappetit #abc7eyewitness #buzzfeast #buzzfeedfood #dinela #lafood #lafoodie #cheatmeal #dailyfoodfeed #eaterla #eatfamous #eeeeeats #eatingfortheinsta #eatersanonymous #foodporn #feedfeed #foodbeast #foodblog #zagat #laeater #eaterla
These come in an endless amount of artery-clogging forms. Each one, to us, is special.
13. Potato Wedges
Another valid name for these is “delicious fried potato triangles.”
12. Sweet Potato Fries
Most days we would rank these at the top spot. Are we bitter about them being ranked in the 12 slot? Don’t ask us today. We’re craving some sweet po-tat-to fries something fierce right now.
11. Chips (British)
The British chip is a shorter, fatter American French fry. We oblige.

What better way is there to enjoy steak fries than with actual steak?
These ones really aren’t much different from the British chip, but we’ll put an American potato before a foreign one any day of the week. ‘Merica.
9. Cheese Fries
These are some of the cheesiest cheese fries I've ever had! Cheese fries, in reality, are a more-boring form of the chili cheese fry. We suggest swapping their rankings.
Crinkle-cut fries are iconic. Why? Because, well, look at them!
A high pile of shoestring fries sounds just fine to us.
6. Curly Fries
Many things could be ranked at the top of this list, but curly fries really probably should be…
5. Garlic Fries
Garlic fries are standard cut fries with garlic. That makes them fancier. Thus, if we had to keep them both this high up in the ranking, we’d switch this with the next entry.
4. Standard Cut
These are regular. These taste great, but these are boring.
3. Tater Tots
We flipping love tater tots, and, like Napoleon Dynamite, we stash them in our pockets. Why on Earth, though, are they ranked third on a list of types of French fries?!
2. Belgian Fries
Irregularly sliced, double-fried, and served in a cone. You know how the Belgians do.
1. Waffle Fries
Yes, waffle fries are amazing. Sweet potato waffle fries, though, should be number one.
However, some people are not pleased with this list, published originally in 2016. Check out some of their responses below.
I have never seen such injustice. Curly fries deserve better. Don't even get me started on the smileys https://t.co/PTOMNEeYPv

The cut and the topping should not be in the same ranking
— Lion (@Liiiiiiiiiion) June 10, 2017
Tater tots are unconscionably overrated on this list. That ranking had hipster circa 2005 written all over it.
— James Peters (@legaljeeves) June 11, 2017
Shoestring fries are trash. Engrave this on my headstone, this is a hill I am literally willing to die on cc: @buzz
— Meowrey (@meowrey) June 11, 2017
Putting curly fries so far down the list makes me suspicious of the author as a person.
— Nicole (@MadrasAndPearls) June 10, 2017
Are you Team Waffle Fry? It seems like the biggest injustice was dealt to the reliably fun curly fry. It didn’t deserve this.
