12 Relaxing Austin Patios Best for Beating the Texas Heat

Spring has sprung in the South, and like many city inhabitants, residents of the Texas Hill Country are ready to get out and play. The weather’s heating up and the sun is gracing us with its presence for a longer period of time which can only mean one thing: it’s time to get your patio living on, and STAT.

When it comes to picking the perfect venue for your patio hang session, it’s crucial to have an idea of what you want your hang to look and feel like. Besides soaking in some sweet and tangible vitamin D, are you looking to grab a few cocktails and an appetizer, or a full blown meal? Is it a Sunday afternoon coffee and conversation stop, or a workweek lunch break to escape the stuffiness that is your office cubicle?

Whatever your reason may be, Austin has you covered. From coffee with a colleague to a full on feast over the weekend, there are places that cater to your specific need. Places that are also acquainted with the idea of marrying comfort with style when it comes to their patios. Places that understand service is king, but the experience is really what rules supreme.

Set the stage, send out an invite, and hit up one of these eleven patios in Austin to bid Hello to springtime in the city.

1. The Oasis

This well-known Austin staple proved that you can rough it up, but you can’t knock it down.

Back in 2005, this Austin eatery, known for their killer sunset views over Lake Travis, was struck by lightning, causing a massive fire to break out and take down about half of the property.

Both indoor and outdoor areas have since been restored, and their menu has also been revamped. So what does this mean for you?

It means stellar views on one of their five patio floors from the self-proclaimed sunset capital of Texas, along with margaritas to match, plus free salsa dancing lessons every Sunday evening.

2. Shoal Creek Saloon

When you get bit by the crawfish bug, there’s only one place in Austin that comes to mind: Shoal Creek Saloon.

For being on a street as busy as Lamar, you’d think the sound of passing cars would take away from the satisfactory creekside view of the patio. If you thought this, you’ve thought wrong.

What's your calling? 1, 3 or 5 lbs.? #atx #shoalcreek #crawfish

Nestled upon Shoal Creek, the Saloon offers your favorite creole recipes served up pipin’ hot with a scenic view.

Whether you want catfish, crawfish or a simple craft beer on the patio, Shoal Creek Saloon will accommodate whatever it is you’re looking for.

3. Bouldin Creek Cafe

If you ever find yourself craving coffee with a side of vegan tomato basil soup, or even feeling the need for a local beer, Bouldin Creek Cafe is your one stop shop.

Located on South 1st Street, Bouldin Creek Cafe is known for their vegetarian and vegan fair, but it has also gathered acclaim from those who don’t follow either diet.

Lovely cuppa on a lovely day! ☕️ Happy #friyay everyone! ✨ What are your weekend plans?

Why? Because the vibe here is something you look for in a restaurant, something that can’t be duplicated.

The best part? This joint is dog and family-friendly, and the waiters will continuously walk around the patio refilling water bowls for your pup’s dining pleasure throughout your stay.

4. The Grove Wine Bar + Kitchen

A post shared by Sophie Garcia (@garcia_sophie1) on

This gem has two locations in Austin, both with killer patios and exceptional views. How can a restaurant be in two totally different locations, yet remain loyal to their welcoming outdoor seating area? We’re not entirely sure, but we’re also not that mad about it either. OK, we’re not mad about it at all.

Once you step foot onto the patio of either location, you’ll be taken away to a mesmerizing land that’s full of shady trees and clean, classic and contemporary decor.

5. Cenote

This is the Eastside haven that you probably didn’t know existed. Located just east of I-35 on Ceasar Chavez, Cenote is crafting up some of your favorite coffee drinks, along with delectable food, and an extensive beer and wine list.

They have a patio on both the front and side of their indoor dining area, giving you the option of a small shaded and fanned area, or a larger area decorated with umbrellaed picnic tables and to-go service.

Any place that serves up specialty espresso drinks, locally-resourced food and alcoholic beverages is already at the top of our lists.

Add the double patio to the mix, and there’s no reason Cenote shouldn’t hold a top spot in your heart.

6. Bangers’s Sausage House & Beer Garden

Not sure where you are or what you're doing but if you aren't here you're in the wrong place! OKTOBERFEST!!!!!

A post shared by bangersaustin (@bangersaustin) on

The dog has met its match at Bangers on Rainey Street, just southeast of downtown Austin.

You’re basically not even at Bangers if you aren’t sitting in their patio area, considering they have live music in said area, and it occupies the majority of the grounds.

Brunch is in full swing folks! #brunch #beergarden

Swing by for a draft beer, a sausage, or the music. Heck, come as a people-watching destination with your pup.

At Bangers, there are also dog kennels and a small park so your pup can get social while you socialize, too!

7. Mozart’s Coffee Roasters

Mozart’s is where the city goes to escape the city without having to actually leave such a beautiful place.

Located on Lake Austin right down the way from Hula Hut, Mozart’s offers craft coffee beverages along with decadent desserts, pastries, and even Austin’s own Amy’s Ice Cream.

Whether you’re coming for a midday study session solo or meeting with a group for a friends birthday, Mozart’s patio offers all of the space to nestle in or spread out. That, and one heck of a view.

8. Azul Tequila

With locations in both North and South Austin, Azul Tequila is serving up one-of-a-kind margaritas and live music on their patio on any given day of the week.

Try your hand at an avocado margarita (which has cilantro in it, but trust us—it’ll all make sense when you try it), or get spicy with a jalapeño margarita.

Love an impromptu margarita date.

The north location’s patio backs up to a creek with taller-than-the-eyes-can-see shoots of bamboo next to overbearing trees to keep you cool when that Texas heat comes-a-blazin’.

9. Shady Grove

It’s not uncommon for there to be a wait for the patio at Shady Grove while the inside is . . . crickets.

Who would wait for a table when there are plenty available? Any Austinite and transplant who knows the importance of good food, good shade, good drinks and of course—live music.

Starting in mid-April yearly, Shady Grove holds Unplugged at the Grove every Thursday into the early summer months.

This is a time to come early, stay late, and enjoy those beautiful Texas nights while sittin’ back in one heck of a grove.

10. Radio Coffee & Beer

If you’re looking to scoot away from the traditional tourist spots, Radio is the place for you. Nestled on Manchaca Road, this neighborhood gem grows in popularity each year and it’s easy to see why.

The shaded tables and delicious beer list makes it the perfect mid-afternoon Saturday spot with its unique bungalow appearance.

Pop over on Monday night for its regular Bluegrass Night, or if comedy is more your speed, head over on Tuesday evening for Comedy Night.

11. Moontower Saloon

Happy Birthday, Steve, ya big lug. . . #moontower #springishere #family #volleyball #birthday

If you’re looking to go deeper into South Austin and you love all kinds of backyard games, then Moontower Saloon has your name all over it.

With beach volleyball courts, washers, cornhole, and spacious room to roam, this neighborhood outdoor bar was designed for Texas summers.

Oh, and the best part about Moontower? Salt Lick BBQ runs a food truck on the premises on Tuesdays, and Thursdays through Sundays.

12. Easy Tiger

Dude, the weekend goes all the way through Sunday night. #sundayfunday must go on.

A post shared by Hayden Walker (@haydenplus1) on

A list of Austin’s best patios would not be complete without Easy Tiger.

Their massive balcony and patio area, complete with ping pong tables, is made up of massive bench seating that brings a real beer garden vibe to downtown Austin.

Their food and beer list is consistently fantastic, but you can’t leave the premises without ordering the biggest pretzel you’ve ever seen because it is just that dang good, y’all.
