10 Items McDonald’s Australia Has That We Wish Were in the U.S.

Think your favorite fast-food spot is the same the world over? Think again. In just about every case, the international menus of the best-loved on-the-go option feature more than a few surprises. While some of these surprises seem bizarre to our stateside palates, other international items have us green with envy.

Here are 10 items on the McDonald’s Australia menu we sure do wish we could get a hold of stateside.

1. Aussie BBQ Angus

The Aussie BBQ Angus is made with an all-Australian Angus beef patty, a rasher (a wide, thin slice) of bacon, “Macca’s” famous cheese, beetroot, caramelized onions, tomato and leaf lettuce, topped with tangy BBQ sauce and mayo on a chili-chive bun.

2. English Brekkie Wrap

Macca’s English Brekkie Wrap offers “traditional” English Breakfast – scrambled eggs, a rasher of bacon and a sausage patty – topped with BBQ sauce and wrapped up to go.

3. Aussie BBQ Brekkie Roll

Two sausage patties, a fried egg, bacon, cheese, mayo and barbecue sauce on a fresh, sesame-seed bun – not a bad way to start the morning in either hemisphere.

4. Down Under Big Mac

You might not be able to order the Down Under Big Mac in the U.S., but you can certainly make one yourself.

Just flip your Big Mac upside-down and you’ve got this specialty sandwich, introduced in support of Australia Day.

5. Tomato Relish Roll

For a slightly less carnivorous breakfast option, the tomato roll has a classic fried egg and bacon topped with baby spinach, sliced tomato and tomato-onion relish on a brioche bun.

6. Sweet Chili and Sour Cream Loaded Fries

McDonald’s’ world-famous fries are smothered in sweet, spicy chili and tangy sour cream; they’re also available loaded up with brown gravy.

7. Summer Sides Box

This summer – don’t forget, it’s still summer in the southern hemisphere – McDonald’s Australia debuted its Summer Sides Box, which includes eight Chicken McNuggets, 12 Chicken McBites (smaller, bite-sized bits of crisp-fried chicken) and 18 Hash Brown Bites, along with three dipping sauces – including the coveted Big Mac sauce.

8. Chipotle Steak McWrap

Macca’s devotes a surprising amount of marquee space to its wraps; the one we in the states most envy is the Chipotle Steak McWrap: sliced rump steak, tomatoes, iceberg lettuce, caramelized onions and spicy chipotle sauce, wrapped in a tortilla.

9. Chocolate, Salted Caramel and Strawberries and Cream Macarons

You read that right – in Australia, McDonald’s serves macarons, the light, pastel-painted pastries made must-haves by Carrie Bradshaw and the rest of the “Sex and the City” squad.

The expansive, down-under dessert menu also offers options like chocolate fudge macadamia cake, raspberry cheesecake and Cookies and Cream Cheesecake.

10. Side of Vegemite

There may be no ingredient more quintessentially Australian than Vegemite, a savory spread made with leftover brewers’ yeast extract and spices.

It’s salty, malty and a little bitter, with a strong taste of umami.
